Darkbeat 13th Bday ft Guy J, Thomas Schumacher, Sebastien Leger, Anthony Pappa – March 13th
The idea for Darkbeat was clear from the very start: underground events, featuring world class DJ’s at Melbourne’s premier venues.
13 years ago we took the first step in turning this idea into what has become a far-reaching and memorable tale; one that continues to share vibrant dance-floor moments and long-lasting memories with the countless partygoers. Many moons later, we celebrate our 13th birthday with this same idea in mind, assembling a line-up that pays homage to the calibre of international acts we’ve been accustomed to, at a venue renowned for it’s non-stop party action across 4 diverse, action packed rooms – the Railway Hotel Brunswick!
The mayhem begins early in the infamous ‘Open-Air Courtyard’ and continues right through to the wee hours of the morning; a marathon dance-floor session in true Darkbeat birthday fashion.
Fasten your seatbelt, put it into drive and head straight through those front doors once again to help celebrate our 13th Birthday with these very special guests….
GUY J (ISRAEL)
Israeli producer Guy J has established himself as one of the most sophisticated and emotive producers in electronic music of the last decade, with a body of work and a sphere of influence that belies relatively short time in the spotlight. Whether it be his sensual, hypnotic take on house music, his deeply textured techno or his wondrous ambient material, his work is always touched with a magic and emotion that few rival.
After bursting on the scene with his debut album ‘Esperanza’ on seminal label, Bedrock, he followed it up with the spectacular 1000 Words in 2011. He then went to prove his remarkable ability to craft a journey with his ‘Balance presents’ release in 2013 and last year released another double album of sublime melodies with his ‘The Trees, the Sea & the Sun’ again on Bedrock.
Not satisfied with dominance in the production and DJ world he has also launched his very own label, Lost & Found in 2012 hosting some of the most exciting and respected names in the scene including Funk D’Void, Hernan Cattaneo, Secret Cinema, Guy Mantzur, Jamie Stevens, Sahar Z & Eelke Kleijn.
THOMAS SCHUMACHER (GER)
Thomas Schumacher is a DJ/producer based in Berlin. After breaking through with the success of “When I Rock” in 1997 on legendary Mancunian Techno label Bush, he went on to release three albums and dozens of high-profile remixes. He has also written the soundtrack for a staging of “Hamlet” at the Schauspielhaus in the former German capital of Bonn. Four of his single releases have entered the German Top 100 with “Schall” being his biggest commercial hit, making it into the top 20 in 2001. Before embarking on his solo career, Thomas Schumacher was a key figure in establishing the rave scene in his native city of Bremen in the early 90s. He founded his first label, SpielZeug Schallplatten in 1998, which went on to release music from acts like Umek, Adam Beyer, Stephan Bodzin, and Deetron to name but a few.
He has also released material as “Elektrochemie” (together with singer Caitlin Devlin and Stephan Bodzin) on Get Physical Music. Thomas Schumacher hosts a monthly radio show “My Electric Ballroom” which is named after his new label “Electric Ballroom”. Once again Thomas takes a unique approach when programming his 60 minute episodes, taking on the role of storyteller and enriching the music with his personal views and first hand knowledge.
SEBASTIEN LEGER (FRA)
S bastien L ger has been one of the most unique and captivating producers the techno scene has brought forward over the past decade. His steadily rising career is proof of where hard graft, dedication, passion, consistency and originality can take a producer to. His prolific work rate belies the thought and effort that he pours into each production, setting him out as the antithesis to lazy contemporaries who churn out unimaginative production line formulas.
Having achieved so much across his career – hundreds of productions, remixes for everyone from Justin Timberlake to Kylie Minogue, DJing at the world’ s biggest festivals and clubs – you’ d be forgiven for thinking he may be one to simply rest on his laurels. He’ s still got some big goals in his sights, however.” There’s a few people I would like to remix that would be a personal satisfaction for me. People like Laurent Garnier, or Daft Punk – that would be an achievement for me, not just because I like their music but also because of what they represent for French music. And I’m always looking for the next thing for my career. It would of course be good to be bigger without compromising my sound. The more people I touch, the better, but without being completely cheesy.”
That’s something you can always count on him for; staying true to his sound and principles. And in this day and age of hip-hop artists going trance and house artists going country, that’ s something which should be highly revered.
